An expected death means that the deceased was either:
For a GP to manage a death as an "expected death" and issue a Cause of Death certificate, they need to have seen the deceased in the last two weeks of their life.
If they have not seen them in the last 2 weeks they may need to discuss the case with the coroner: see "sequence of events following unexpected death".
Unexpected death means that the deceased was fit and healthy and did not have any major medical problems and has suddenly died or has died following an accident of any kind.
EVERY UNEXPECTED DEATH IS REFERRED TO THE CORONER
The hospital doctor or your GP will discuss the case with the coroner. The coroner will investigate the death and there are three outcomes of this investigation:
An inquest is an investigation held in public to establish who the person was, where, when and how they died. It is a legal procedure and aims to:
![]() |
To find out the medical cause of death. |
![]() |
To draw attention to the existence of circumstances which might lead to further deaths if not addressed. |
![]() |
To advance medical knowledge. |
![]() |
To preserve the legal interests of the deceased person’s family or the interested parties. |
An inquest is sometimes held without a post mortem in the case of the elderly, where a single cause of death cannot be stated with certainty, but it is certain that their death was natural.
Post mortem examination is carried out to determine the cause of death.
A pathologist needs to cut open the body and take samples of tissue from various organs to try and investigate the cause of death.
If the family of the deceased wish to avoid this they may choose an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan instead.
Choosing an MRI scan means that the body will not be cut open but please note:
IF THE MRI SCAN CANNOT GIVE A CAUSE OF DEATH A POST MORTEM MAY STILL BE REQUIRED.
The family of the deceased will also need to pay for the MRI scan. These prices are subject to change so please discuss this with the funeral director.

It is interesting to note that the Muslim Students in Manchester used to celebrate Eid at Britannia Restaurant, opposite the BBC television building every year until 1848.They were discussing with the Muslim community leaders to buy a building where all the Muslims can get together. Eventually it was decided to buy a property for this purpose in 1948.
A semidetached house at 22-Upper Park Road,Victoria Park,Manchester was for sale for the price of £ 2,250.. It was a perfect property and area to have a mosque in but the question was how to raise the funds? There were only £ 500 in the Jamiat ul Muslimeen!s account.( The name of Jamiat ul Muslimeen, was first registered by a Muslim at 5 different places in England. at London, Woking, Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow after the end of the Khilafat e Usmania in 1930s) A meeting was arranged for this purpose to discuss how to raise the funds?. In this meeting a prominent business man Mr Ahmad Dawood ( dawood textile ) promised to donate £ 1000.It was decided to buy the said property. The details of the raised funds were as under.
A sum of £1,000 was donated by Mr Ahmad Dawood, Mr M.Hanif and Mr M.Ismail, both from Memon community, contributed £ 750. A further sum of £ 500 was collected from the rest of the Muslim Community. Al-Hamdu Lillah the property known as West View at 22-Upper Park Road,Victoria Park was bought by Jamiat ul Muslimeen. The High Commissioner of Pakistan, H.E Ibrahim Rahmat Ullah, the Ambassador of Pakistan, came from London to inaugurate the opening ceremony.
The first President and Imam was Abdullah Kassas, from Syrian and Mr Akbar Ali, an engineering student, later on was awarded O.B.E. was the first G.Secretary of the Jamiat-ul-Muslimeen.He is still alive and lives in Liverpool ( Dec.2012) All the Muslim Student Unions, Egyptia,Syrian,Indian Pakistani and Afghani were having their offices in the mosque and used to held their meetings regularly.
Our youth, who are born and brought up in the U.K. might be interested to know about the history of the plot and property bought in 1949 by our elders for the community. The land registry record tells us as under:-

It was a big 3 storey building consisting of basement, lounge, kitchen and two further rooms on the ground floor. 4 bed rooms on the first floor and further three bed rooms on the third floor. A sum of £550 was spent to make a room for prayer, a room for meeting and a room for sports. All bedrooms were let to students to generate the income to meet the running expenses.
Back yard was used to play volley ball and a net was fixed at the back yard. According to Mr Akbar Ali, they could not find a volley ball from any sport shop in Manchester and have to buy a no 1 football ( small for children) There were Afghani Students who used to play and teach volley ball game. Mr Akbar Ali was very proud that they introduced the volley ball game in the UK if not then at least in the Manchester area.Indoor sport facilities were available and competition were held regularly.
There were 10/15 regular Juma Namazi in the first few years and the first Eid was Celebrated by 50 Muslim,Hindu and Sikh community in the mosque. And the food was served on Eid. The food service was provided until the building was demolished for purpose built masjid. Sardar Mohammad (Boss) was the head of the food department. The population of Muslims were growing in Manchester area with a flow of labour immigrants from sub-continent to U.K. There was a need for a bigger hall for the congregation and other services it was decided in December 1968 to demolish the present building and build a purpose-built mosque. An architect was appointed to advise on this issue .There was a solicitors firm to advise on the legal issues and an chartered account firm to look after the accounts .A number of founder members moved to other cities with their jobs/works and new elections were the need of the time.
