SPEECH: Milad Sharif

This is an after taraweeh speech made by Hafiz Sahib during Ramdhan 2004.
Many thanks to Brother A for the transcription.

BismillahiRahmanirRahim. Respected and honourable listeners, Milad un Nabi () is that every year on the advent of the blessed month of rabbiual aval sharif , we see the Muslim ummah divided, majority of the ummah deems it correct the Islamic and right to celebrate the birth of rasoolulah () but sadly we also have a small minority which preaches otherwise.

For this subject I have selected because in the trawee prayers we heard Allah talking about the birth of two great anmbiya. What is milad? It is an Arabic word which means the time or the place of birth and when we say Milad un Nabi it now means the time or the place of the birth of nabiullah ().

Allah has talked about the birth of many ambiya In the QURAN itself you know very well again and again Allah talks about the takhleek. The creation of Adam alayhesalaam many of places of the QURAN Allah has referred to the birth of Musa alayhesalaam and in the two verses that we heard in the tarwee prayers. Number 1 Allah says about a great Nabi sayedunah Yahya alayheslaam who is known as John the Baptist in Christianity. Allah says about him “and peace be upon yahya the day he was born” Allah is talking about the Milad of Yahya alayhesalaam Peace be upon him the day he was born and a little further again in surrah Maryam we learn about the pregnancy of Sayedah Mariyam alayhesalaam how she became pregnant Gibraeel came to her he blew she became pregnant she gave birth she brings the child back to her people and they all accuse her without going into detail then Allah states about Sayeduna Isa alyhesalaam when he himself says “ and peace be upon me the day I was born” So here Sayudena Isa alayhesalaam a great Rasool he himself send salutations upon him own self when in particular concerning the day the he came into this world so eesa alayhesalaam in the QURAN ul majid is celebrating his milad. Milad of eesa alayhesalaam milad of yahaya alayhesalaam milad of musa alayhesalaam and the great other prophets Allah (swt) has talked about in detail in the QURAN ul majid it self so alhumdullihah we who celebrate the Ahle-Sunnah-Wal-Jammah we know very well that it is part and parcel of the teachings of islam the verses of the QURAN and the hadith of rasoolulah () and the practice of muslims for the last fourteen centuries one on the names of rasoolulah () is Fadlullah Rasoolullah is Fadhlullah and another name of rasoolulah () is Rahmatullah he is Fadhlullah and he is rahmatullah when we understand this let us now refer to a verse of the QURAN in surah Younas when Allah says “ they should rejoice when ever they are blessed with Fadhlullah and rahmatullah” what should the believers do “they should rejoice” express their happiness and there gratitude for Allah showering his grace and his rahmat and his mercy upon them another very famous verse of the QURAN surah WaDuha, the last verse of this great surah Allah says “and as for the bounty of your lord proclaim it” which is the biggest Nehmat of Allah? Who is the biggest Nehmat of Allah? non other than muhammedurasoolullah () he is the greatest Nehmat of Allah in fact all other Nehmats every other bounty and favour and blessing of Allah we have through the grace of rasoolulah () if it wasn’t for Aqa-Alhi-AsalatuAsalaam we would not have existed our own existence our physical being and every Nehmat of Allah is through the Wasila (intersession) of rasoolullah () Aqa alayhesalaam himself says “I am the one who distribute the bounties of Allah” Allah has given me the keys of all his treasures I own the keys of all the treasures of Allah and Allah has made me a Qasim (Arabic) “I am the one who distributes and Allah is one who gives so every Nehmat that we have is through the prophet () and Allah says in the QURAN “and as for the Nehmat of your lord you must proclaim” this is a command of the QURAN ul majid that when Allah gives you the smallest of his Nehmats convey it proclaim it declare it.

There was a Sahabi who once walked into the blessed gathering of rasoolulah () he was dressed in rags torn clothes, hair unkept not very beautiful appearance rasoolulah () said to the Sahabi my beloved Sahabi has Allah not blessed you with wealth with possession with property he says Ya rasoolulah yes Allah has showered me with great much wealth I am very affluant very rich upon this the prophet () says “if Allah loves to see upon you every favour that he has bestowed upon you what every Nehmat Allah has given you it should be shown form your wujood so if Allah has given you wealth and possession you should dress nicely have nice clothes but the intention must be the thanking of the creator” for many verses of the QURAN I can go on for hours and hours but to finish off you know one of the beautiful sunnahs oh Aqa alayhesalaatuwasalaam was to fast every Mondays the prophet () used to fast every Monday, every Monday he used to fast and this hadith is a Sahih hadith quoted by Imam Muslim. When Sahabaa inquired you know those who say to you celebrate milad prophet never celebrated sahabba never celebrated tabieen never celebrated its not the practice of great muslims of the past where have you come up with it its bidah its Kufr. Some go on to the extent to say it is Shrik Aoosobillah this is the Daleel that prophet () himself celebrated his milad prophet () himself thanked Allah for his birth and especially on the day that he was born every Mondays fifty two times a year he used to fast Sabbah asked ya rasoolulah why do you fast every Mondays he could have given other reasons I fast to become closer to Allah I fast to become a obedient servant of Allah i fast to make me closer to my creator he could have given various other reasons but when they inquired the prophet () said why do I fast on a Monday because Monday “this is the day when Allah caused my birth on this earth” (translated from urdu) milad this is the prophet is talking about his own milad and he is thanking Allah by fasting every Monday because Monday was the day when he graced this world with his physical being so many many verses of the QURAN many a hadiths of rasoolulah (). Some brothers argue that because the prophet did not do it the way we do it today The prophet did not have no processions the prophet () did not have gatherings in the masjid they have given various and very many answers for these very silly silly objections but first and foremost we must remember that anything that muslims deem correct is acceptable in Islam the prophet () says “Whatever muslims deem correct with Allah that action is also correct and part of islam. So celebration of milad of akah alayhesalaathowasalaam alhumdullihah as we have seen is proven through the QURAN and through the hadith of rasoolullah (). May Allah give us Tawfeek to understand. Ameen.
