REASONS WHY WE KISS THUMBS AND TOUCH EYES QURRAT AYNAYYA BIKA YA RASUL-ALLAH ("You are the light of my eyes, 0' Rasul-Allah") A Hadith in Dailami narrated by Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (radi Allahu anho) states that the Prophet Mohammad (sallallaho alaihi wasallam) said: "When the Muazzin says, "Muhammadur Rasulullah," if one kisses his two thumbs and touches his eyes and says, "Ash-hadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa Rasuluh, radhi-tu bil-lahi Rabban wa bil-Islami deen-an wa bi Muhammadin sall-Allahu alaihi wa sallama Nabiyyan," my intercession becomes halal for him." Another Hadith sharif declares: "I will look for and find and take to Paradise on the Day of Judgment the one who put their thumbs on their eyes upon hearing my name in Azaan." Hanafi scholar al- Tahtawi, writes on the authority of al-Quhistani in his annotation in Mara al Falah: "It is mustahab to put the thumbs on one's eyes and say, "Qurrat aynayya bika ya Rasul-Allah! Allahumma matti'ni bi-s-sami wa l-basri." when the Muazzin recites Rasul-Allah's (sallallaho alaihi wasallam's) name for the second time in the Azaan, because Rasulullah will take the one who does so to Paradise." Sheikh-Zada who passed away in 1544, in his annotation of Tafsir by al-Badawi, narrates from Abu 'I-Wafa that he saw some fatwas stating that Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (rahmat-Allah alaihi) kissed nails of his two thumbs and then touched his two eyes with them when he heard Rasulullah's (sallallaho alaihi wasallam) name in the Azaan, and when the Prophet asked him why he did so, he said, "To attain blessings through your blessed name." Rasulullah (sallallaho alaihi wasallam) then declared, "You did well. He who does so never suffers from eye disease." One should say, "Allahumma m'mahfuz aynayya w nawwirhuma," when the nails touch the eye-lids. AI-Quhistani, who passed away in Bukhara in 1508, also reports from the book, Kanz al-ibad: "It is mustahab to say, "sall-Allahu wa sallama alaika ya Rasulullah!" when one hears the first 'Muhammad' in the Azaan and to say, "Qurrat aynayya bika ya Rasul-Allah!" upon hearing the blessed name being repeated and then to put the two thumbs on one's eyes and say, "Allahumma matti'ni bi-s-sami wa l-basri" before removing one's thumbs: our master Rasulullah (sallallaho alaihi wasallam) will take this person to Paradise." A Hadith states, " 'Rahmat' (Allah's Mercy) descends where the pious are mentioned," indicates that this deed is permissible. Imam Ahmad bin Hambal, Ibn al-Jawzi and Ibn Hajar confirmed the authenticity of this Hadith sharif, which is also quoted by Imam al-Suyuti in his Jami' as-Saghir. Our Prophet (sallalllaho alaihi wasallam) is certainly the highest of all prophets and the pious. And Allah ta' ala shows Mercy when his name is mentioned. Prayers said when Allah ta' ala shows mercy will be accepted. It is a prayer for one's happiness in this world and the Hereafter to say, "My eyes gain light and my heart is joyful with you, 0' Rasul-Allah," when the Azaan is heard. Such a prayer is compatible with Islam and pious people through the ages have followed this practice. AI-Haj Allama Mufti Muhammad Ameen, the author of Aab-e-Kauthar, the famous book on Salaat-o-Salaam states, "The act of kissing the thumbs and touching the eyes is not essential but reveals respect and reverence for the Holy Prophet (sallallaho alaihi wasallam). Actually this is a bargain of love. The hearts blessed with the love of the Holy Prophet (sallallaho alaihi was all am) will not deny this noble action. But if someone's heart is bereft of the love of the Holy Prophet (sallallaho alaihi wasallam), he is incurable. If he denies this blissful action which guarantees salvation, it is the echo of his inner self." May Allah give us tawfiq. Ameen. Taken from "Sirat ul Muslimin" (Omnipresence Edition) |
